Finding NSW Government jobs is not the hard part. There are thousands of job ads, alerts and search filters ready to give you more links than you can reasonably use.
The hard part is deciding which roles are actually worth an application.
That sounds like the same problem, but it is not. A job search gives you vacancies. A useful job matching report looks at your evidence, target direction, realistic level, application workload and likely competition, then works out where you can make the strongest case.
To show you what that looks like, we created three fictional clients: a university researcher with no government experience, a data-focused consultant from a Big Four firm, and a marketing professional who works across campaigns, social media, websites and content. We then matched them to 20 real NSW Government roles that were open when we checked them on 8 August 2026.
The clients are fictional.
The jobs are live.
These are their stories.
If you want ongoing support from a whole team, check whether you are eligible for our three-month AutoPilot plan. It can support you with everything from finding the right role to preparing for interviews.

What a useful job matching report should tell you
A list of jobs is not a strategy. If all you receive is ten links containing words from your CV, you still have to do the difficult part yourself.
A proper matching process should answer more useful questions:
- Which roles align most closely with evidence you can already prove?
- Which roles are realistic stretches rather than wishful applications?
- Could a lower or adjacent role create a faster route into government?
- Are you applying at a consistent and defensible grade or salary level?
- Does the role have a qualification, licence, clearance or specialist-context hurdle?
- What would you need to highlight to make the transfer credible?
- Which application should come first, especially when closing dates are close together?
This matters because two people can both be capable of doing a role while having very different chances of making it through the written application. The panel can only assess what the application proves. If your strongest examples sit outside the role’s main evidence areas, you may spend hours writing an application that was always going to be difficult to defend.
The reverse also happens. People rule themselves out because the title is unfamiliar, the agency is unexpected, or their experience comes from a university, consultancy or private company rather than government. A good report should identify those hidden matches too.
How primary, stretch and bridge matches work
We use three pathway labels in this example.
Primary matches are the roles where the person’s current evidence gives them the clearest argument. They may still face strong competition, but the application does not need to perform major gymnastics to explain the fit.
Stretch matches are credible opportunities with a higher hurdle. The role may be more senior, require specialist contextual knowledge, or expect a kind of responsibility the person has only partly demonstrated. A stretch is not a random long shot. There still needs to be a defensible transfer.
Bridge matches are adjacent roles that can help someone build the government, domain or level-specific experience required for a later move. A bridge is not automatically a poor match or permanent step backwards. Sometimes it is the fastest practical route to the work the person ultimately wants.
That distinction is important. If every recommendation is described as a perfect fit, the matching process is not being honest enough.
Fictional client one: the university researcher
The profile we are matching
Our first fictional client has worked in university research. They can design studies, conduct literature reviews, manage ethics submissions, analyse qualitative and quantitative data, coordinate research projects, write reports and publications, and work with academic and external stakeholders.
They have no NSW Government experience. That does not mean they need to search only for jobs with “research” in the title, but it does mean their first application needs to translate academic evidence into outcomes a government panel can assess. We would look for roles that value evidence, analysis, evaluation, clear writing and stakeholder work without quietly requiring years of government policy experience.
Quick comparison
| Match | Role | Salary | Location | Closing date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | Data Research Analyst | $102,936 to $113,579 | Huntingwood | 16 August 2026 |
| Stretch | Senior Evaluation Officer | $133,348 to $146,945 | Hurstville | 16 August 2026 |
| Primary | Research Officer, ANZ Fontan Registry | $87,813 to $116,824 | Greater Western Sydney | 21 August 2026 |
| Bridge | Policy Analyst | $116,981 to $129,492 | Parramatta | 23 August 2026 |
| Stretch | Research Governance Officer | $118,821 to $140,201 | Greater Western Sydney | 20 August 2026 |
| Bridge | Research Administrative Assistant | $78,183.85 to $79,973.57 | Liverpool | 23 August 2026 |
Data Research Analyst
This is one of the cleanest transfers in the whole article. The role asks the applicant to analyse and interpret research data from multiple sources, identify key issues, assess findings, and turn that work into evidence-based reports and recommendations. Those are normal academic research activities expressed in government language.
Application requirements
CV and two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
Research methods, data interpretation, quality checking, concise report writing and recommendations that influenced a decision.
Senior Evaluation Officer
The subject matter fits, but the level creates the stretch. This role wants evidence of managing a complex project from beginning to end, including risks, stakeholders and delivery. A researcher who has led a substantial multi-partner project may have that evidence. Someone whose experience has mainly involved contributing to a supervisor’s projects may not.
Application requirements
CV and two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
End-to-end project ownership, evaluation design, risk management, stakeholder negotiation and the practical changes resulting from the evaluation.
Research Officer, Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry
This role aligns strongly with a conventional university research background. It covers literature reviews, study design, ethics and governance applications, participant recruitment, data collection, analysis, publications and project management. The applicant would also work with clinicians, researchers, coordinators, collaborators and families.
Application requirements
CV, maximum five pages.
What to highlight
Primary research, ethics and governance, sensitive data, independent project work, publications and collaboration across disciplines.
Policy Analyst
This role shows why matching by title alone is too narrow. Our fictional client may never have called themselves a policy analyst, but the job involves qualitative and quantitative research, literature reviews, survey analysis, synthesising evidence and explaining technical concepts in plain English.
Application requirements
CV up to five pages and a two-page cover letter incorporating the targeted question or questions.
What to highlight
Survey or research dataset analysis, publication-standard writing, practical recommendations, project organisation and explaining complex findings clearly.
Research Governance Officer
An experienced university researcher may already understand ethics committees, governance submissions, research agreements and institutional approval processes. That gives them a credible starting point. The stretch comes from the specialist clinical governance environment, including NHMRC guidance, Good Clinical Practice, TGA regulation, contracts, budgets and indemnification.
Application requirements
CV and individual responses to the selection criteria.
What to highlight
Ethics and governance applications, regulatory compliance, researcher advice, committee reporting, agreements and relationships with universities or research partners.
Research Administrative Assistant
This role is a meaningful salary and level step down for an experienced researcher, so it should not be presented as an equal alternative to the primary matches. It is here to demonstrate a genuine bridge pathway. The role supports clinical trials and research teams through documentation, databases, meeting coordination, reports, financial records and stakeholder contact.
Application requirements
Individual responses to the selection criteria.
What to highlight
Research administration, accuracy, confidentiality, database management, financial or document control and support for busy investigators or project teams.
Fictional client two: the data-focused consultant
The profile we are matching
Our second fictional client is an experienced consultant from a Big Four firm. They work with complex datasets, build reporting and business intelligence products, identify trends, communicate findings to executives and turn analysis into recommendations. They are also used to working across projects, deadlines and demanding stakeholders.
Their risk is not a lack of transferable experience. It is presenting themselves as a generic consultant who has “worked with senior stakeholders” without showing the systems, decisions, reporting frameworks and measurable improvements behind that claim.
Quick comparison
| Match | Role | Salary | Location | Closing date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stretch | Business Analyst, Reporting | $118,821 to $140,201 | Western Sydney | 11 August 2026 |
| Primary | Senior Data Analyst | $137,551 to $154,055 | Macquarie Park | 12 August 2026 |
| Bridge | Business Performance Reporting Officer | $108,374 to $119,210 | Macquarie Park | 14 August 2026 |
| Primary | Senior Intelligence, Systems and Reporting Officer | $142,695 to $152,731 | Maitland or negotiable DPHI office | 16 August 2026 |
| Stretch | Senior Business Analyst | $133,348 to $146,945 | Sydney | 19 August 2026 |
| Primary | Business Performance Analyst | $137,551 to $154,055 | Macquarie Park | 21 August 2026 |
| Primary | Data Analyst | $116,981 to $129,492 | Parramatta | 23 August 2026 |
Business Analyst, Reporting
The reporting work is highly relevant. The role covers service-performance analysis, data integrity, business planning, continuous improvement, Power BI, evaluation and presenting findings for decisions. The health context is the main hurdle, particularly if the consultant has never worked with health data, clinical systems or service measures.
Application requirements
No specific written documents were confirmed in the public advertisement. Applicants should inspect the online form before planning the application.
What to highlight
Power BI, performance reporting, data governance, service improvement, stakeholder consultation and an example of turning analysis into a management decision.
Senior Data Analyst
This role is close to the fictional client’s core consulting evidence. It involves integrating portfolio, project and financial data, developing dashboards and reporting frameworks, analysing capacity and investment performance, and providing evidence-based recommendations to business stakeholders.
Application requirements
The public advertisement does not list the written documents. Check the Transport application form for document fields and capability questions before starting.
What to highlight
Complex data integration, dashboard design, portfolio reporting, executive recommendations, data-quality improvements and business impact.
Business Performance Reporting Officer
This role sits at a more operational level. It focuses on data collection, validation, routine reports, dashboards, metric tracking, documentation and quality controls. An experienced Big Four consultant may be capable of more senior work, but this could still be a deliberate bridge if entering government quickly is the priority.
Application requirements
The public advertisement does not list the written documents. Check the Transport application form for document fields and questions.
What to highlight
Reporting accuracy, governance, version control, data validation, competing deadlines and improvements to recurring reporting processes.
Senior Intelligence, Systems and Reporting Officer
This role uses more than data production. It asks for high-quality reports, briefings, business intelligence products and evidence-based recommendations, along with the ability to translate complex information for different audiences. It also involves improving systems, policies, procedures and compliance outcomes.
Application requirements
CV and cover letter.
What to highlight
Business intelligence, evidence-based advice, executive communication, process improvement, risk identification and cross-government or regulated-environment stakeholders where available.
Senior Business Analyst
Many consultants use the business analyst title, but this role expects detailed systems and process documentation, product-backlog management, complex implementation experience and the ability to communicate risks to senior decision-makers. It also operates against immovable election deadlines.
Application requirements
CV and a separate targeted-question response.
What to highlight
Complex system implementation, requirements validation, process documentation, backlog priorities, supplier relationships and delivery under fixed deadlines.
Business Performance Analyst
This is another strong match. The role analyses performance data, identifies trends and risks, develops dashboards and analytics, monitors performance frameworks, and turns information from multiple systems into recommendations for planning and resource allocation. Power BI, Tableau and Excel are all relevant.
Application requirements
The public advertisement does not list the written documents. Check the Transport application form before deciding how much work the application will require.
What to highlight
Performance frameworks, dashboard design, analytical judgement, data quality, recommendations and communication with non-technical stakeholders.
Data Analyst
This role suits someone who can manage complex analytical work and present outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences. The consultant’s project discipline and stakeholder skills should transfer well, provided the application includes actual examples rather than a list of clients and tools.
Application requirements
Two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
Analytical project delivery, stakeholder engagement, clear visual or written communication, technical-to-plain-English translation and respectful work in the education-policy context.
Fictional client three: the marketing professional
The profile we are matching
Our third fictional client has a broad marketing background. They create social media and longer-form content, maintain websites, coordinate campaigns, work with creative partners and develop marketing strategies. They can move between hands-on production and planning.
The matching question is not simply whether a role contains the word “marketing”. Some government opportunities focus on public information, digital governance or internal communication rather than promotion. The client needs to decide which parts of their background they genuinely want to keep using.
Quick comparison
| Match | Role | Salary | Location | Closing date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary | Digital Content Officer | $116,981 to $129,492 | Parramatta | 11 August 2026 |
| Primary | Senior Marketing Coordinator | $116,981 to $129,492 | Sydney | 11 August 2026 |
| Primary | Online Content Officer | $104,323 to $115,110 | Sydney Olympic Park | 16 August 2026 |
| Primary | Digital Communications Officer | $113,574 to $125,720 | North-West Sydney | 16 August 2026 |
| Stretch | Senior School Digital Marketing Advisor | $133,348 to $146,945 | Greater Western Sydney | 18 August 2026 |
| Bridge | Advisor, Internal Communications and Engagement | $116,981 to $129,492 | Sydney | 18 August 2026 |
| Primary | Coordinator, Web and Digital Content | $116,981 to $129,492 | Wollongong with hybrid work | 23 August 2026 |
Digital Content Officer
This role aligns with someone who can manage digital content across multiple projects, respond to emerging issues and keep information accurate through proper governance. The strongest application would show more than copywriting. It would demonstrate how the applicant managed approvals, stakeholder disagreement, deadlines and content accuracy.
Application requirements
CV and cover letter.
What to highlight
Digital content production, editorial governance, stakeholder coordination, competing priorities and maintaining accurate public information.
Senior Marketing Coordinator, World Cups and Major Sporting Events
This is the most conventional marketing match in the group. It involves integrated programs and campaigns across multiple channels, working with event partners, government stakeholders, creative teams and media agencies. A private-sector marketer should have recognisable evidence for this work.
Application requirements
CV up to five pages and one-page cover letter.
What to highlight
Integrated campaigns, channel strategy, agency management, event or partnership marketing, deadlines and measurable outcomes.
Online Content Officer
This is a direct pathway for someone with substantial online content experience. The emergency-services setting raises the importance of accuracy, accessibility, approvals and audience needs. Content is not simply there to attract attention. It may need to help people understand services or act on important information.
Application requirements
CV and two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
Website content, audience needs, accessibility, quality assurance, approvals and calm delivery when information is time-sensitive.
Digital Communications Officer
This role focuses on how people find, understand and act on health information. A marketer with website, content design or information-architecture experience could make a strong case, especially if they have improved navigation, simplified complex material or designed content around user needs.
Application requirements
CV up to five pages and two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
User-centred content, information structure, accessibility, complex stakeholder approvals and making technical information easier to understand.
Senior School Digital Marketing Advisor
The digital-marketing subject matter fits directly. The stretch comes from the level and advisory environment. The role works with principals, Directors Educational Leadership and executive stakeholders to solve complex school-marketing challenges.
Application requirements
CV up to five pages and two-page cover letter.
What to highlight
Strategic digital advice, executive relationships, local audience insight, influencing decisions and measuring whether the recommended approach worked.
Advisor, Internal Communications and Engagement
This is a bridge from external marketing into employee communication and engagement. The writing and project-management skills transfer, but the purpose changes. Success depends on helping staff understand, trust and act on information rather than generating leads or public campaign reach.
Application requirements
CV and cover letter.
What to highlight
Audience-focused writing across channels, change or internal campaigns, employee events, stakeholder consultation and evidence of engagement rather than promotional reach alone.
Coordinator, Web and Digital Content
This is the closest match to the full fictional profile. The role covers websites, intranet, social media, online applications, content integration and stakeholder needs. It also asks applicants to explain how they improved a website or digital experience and balanced different stakeholder expectations.
Application requirements
One-page cover letter, four-page CV and targeted response or responses. Check the application form carefully because the source instructions refer to targeted responses in more than one place.
What to highlight
Website and CMS ownership, social and digital-content integration, user experience, stakeholder trade-offs, governance and a measurable improvement to an online service.
What this example reveals about job matching
The three profiles produce very different shortlists, but the matching logic is consistent.
First, the role title is only a starting point. The academic researcher has a strong policy bridge because the actual work involves research and evidence synthesis. The consultant has a strong intelligence and reporting match because the role needs recommendations, not just data production. The marketer has credible digital-communications matches where accuracy and user needs matter more than promotion.
Second, level and context can change an apparently perfect match. The Senior Evaluation Officer role sounds ideal for a researcher until you examine the project-leadership requirement. The Senior Business Analyst role sounds normal for a consultant until you test for implementation ownership. The Senior School Digital Marketing Advisor role sounds directly relevant until you look at the executive advisory expectations.
Third, bridge roles need to be honest. A lower-level research administration or reporting role may help someone enter government, but it may also breach their salary floor or underuse their experience. The right answer depends on what that person is trying to achieve and what trade-offs they are prepared to make.
Finally, matching should change the order of effort. A role closing tomorrow with a demanding written application may be less useful than a slightly later role where the person has stronger evidence. A good report does not just say “apply”. It helps the person decide what to review first, what to reject and where to put their best examples.
If you want to improve your own search before paying for support, start by building three columns: primary, stretch and bridge. For every role, write down the evidence you can prove, the gaps you would need to explain and any essential requirement you cannot negotiate. If you cannot explain why a role belongs in one of those columns, it probably has not been assessed closely enough.
