Painter Grade 3 Application Checklist: Screening Questions and Trade Evidence

Painter Grade 3, Sydney Harbour Bridge NSW Government job application checklist
In this guide

Introduction

These three Painter Grade 3 positions work on the preservation of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, including industrial surface preparation, abrasive blasting and protective coating across steel, timber and concrete structures.

This guide explains how to apply for Painter Grade 3 and how to prepare for the screening questions in the Transport for NSW portal. The public vacancy does not request a separate resume or cover letter, so the online form needs to be checked before you begin writing.

Trade experience matters here, although the panel also needs evidence that you can work safely around an operating piece of major infrastructure. Your examples should make your method, quality checks and response to hazards easy to follow.

The role has clear licence and ticket requirements. Confirm those first, then build your answers around comparable industrial painting and blasting work.

Application requirements

Submit through the online portal and complete its screening questions. Copy each question and its word limit into a working document before drafting because the question wording is not published on the public vacancy page.

  • Responses to the screening questions in the online application portal.
  • For roles at Transport For NSW prepare a 2 page cover letter, but also log in and view the application form as there are specific capability questions not listed in the job ad.

Written prompts and portal checks

  1. Use the exact screening-question wording and limits displayed in the application portal.

Essential role requirements and work conditions

  • Certificate III in Painting and Decorating, or equivalent relevant experience that meets licensing requirements.
  • Current Construction Industry White Card.
  • Current unrestricted NSW driver licence.
  • Willingness to obtain any further legislated or internal licences and tickets directed by the employer.
  • Capacity for onsite work and occasional work outside regular hours.

What to highlight in your application

The panel needs enough detail to assess what you personally did, why you chose that approach and what followed. The areas below are the strongest evidence priorities for this role.

Evidence area How to demonstrate it
Industrial painting and blasting Use an example involving surface preparation and protective coating in a heavy industrial setting. Name the substrate, preparation standard, coating system and the checks you used before the work was accepted.
Safety around complex infrastructure Describe a job with access, height, lead paint, plant movement or other serious hazards. Explain the permit, isolation, PPE or exclusion controls you followed and how you responded when conditions changed.
Quality and manufacturer specifications Show how you interpreted a specification, prepared the work area and checked film thickness, finish or another relevant quality measure. Include what you did when the result was outside tolerance.
Working as part of a trade crew Choose a job where painters, other trades and site supervision had to coordinate closely. Make clear how you communicated handovers, protected the schedule and supported a safe result.

Example application structure

Answer each portal question directly. Start with the site and task, then explain your responsibility, the technical method, the safety controls and the quality result.

  1. Copy the full screening question and note its limit before writing.
  2. Choose an example from industrial painting, blasting or comparable infrastructure maintenance.
  3. Explain the specification, equipment and controls that governed the job.
  4. Describe your own decisions and how you worked with the crew.
  5. Finish with the checked result and what it meant for safety, durability or reopening the asset.

What the panel will want to see in your examples

  • Hands-on experience with abrasive blasting and protective coatings.
  • A disciplined response to safety, lead paint, access and plant risks.
  • Work that met a defined specification and passed inspection.
  • Reliable communication in a crew working around live infrastructure.

Before you submit

Check that your licence, White Card and trade qualification details are current and entered consistently. Keep certificate copies ready if the portal or later checks request them.

Read every screening question again after drafting. A technically strong example still needs to answer the precise question and stay inside its limit.
