NSW Public Sector Shutdown 2024: What You Need to Know

The festive season is upon us—trees are up, Kristy Kreme is selling Grinch-themed doughnuts, and for some, Michael Bublé is back in full swing. But for those in the NSW public sector or hoping to join it, it’s also time to prepare for the annual NSW Public Sector Shutdown.

Whether you’re currently applying for roles, recently attended an interview, or gearing up for 2025 opportunities, this guide covers everything you need to know, including key dates, impacts of the shutdown, and how to make the most of this period.

When Is the NSW Public Sector Shutdown in 2024?

The NSW Public Sector shutdown happens every year, typically spanning from the week of Christmas through to the week after New Year’s. For 2024, public sector agencies are directed to shut down from Monday, 23 December 2024, and will reopen on Monday, 6 January 2025.

Event Date Description
NSW Public Sector Shutdown Begins Monday, 23 December 2024 The official start of the annual public sector shutdown period.
NSW Public Sector Reopens Monday, 6 January 2025 Public sector agencies resume regular operations.
Recruitment Advertising Cut-off Sunday, 8 December 2024 Last day for advertising new roles before the recruitment slowdown.
Recruitment Surge Expected Monday, 20 January 2025 Centralised HR teams plan to resume normal hiring activities.

What Are the Impacts of the Shutdown?

The shutdown provides an opportunity for most public sector workers to take time off, often using their annual leave days mixed in with all the public holiday. Public servants enjoy an extra day off during this period, known as the Public Sector Holiday, normally given the day after boxing day.

However, not all roles are included in this shutdown:

  • Essential frontline roles, such as hospital staff, police, firefighters, and other emergency services, remain operational.
  • In agencies with a mix of frontline and administrative functions, the “back office” may also remain partially open, but operations usually slow down significantly.
  • Many staff will focus on “must-do” tasks rather than launching new initiatives or engaging in longer-term planning.

For those in non-essential roles, the shutdown period can mean extended delays in services, communication, and project progress as most employees are on leave.

Government recruitment is already starting to slow. In order to develop application guides to help you find a role, I review job postings daily. It is clear that fewer and fewer roles are being advertised each week. And those that do are being advertised for a shorter period, meaning you have less time to apply. This is a great reason to sign up for free as a digital member so you get application guides direct to your inbox.

What If I’m Applying for Roles During the Shutdown?

If you’re in the middle of the application process or preparing to apply, here’s what to expect:

  • Slowing recruitment activity: The NSW Government typically reduces recruitment activities from early December. Managers have been instructed to cease advertising new roles by 8 December 2024, and very few positions will be posted between this date and early January.
  • Longer recruitment timelines: If you’ve already applied for a role, be prepared for delays. Scheduling interviews and assessments is challenging when hiring managers and panel members are on leave.
  • Limited communication: Hiring managers may want to progress recruitment, but the reality is that things will likely stall until the new year.

If you’re feeling anxious about your application, a polite email to check on the status is acceptable—but it’s best to wait until mid-January 2025 to follow up.

How to Prepare for 2025 Opportunities

While recruitment slows down during the shutdown, it’s the perfect time to prepare for the hiring surge that typically follows. HR teams are expected to resume normal operations from 20 January 2025, and many roles will be advertised shortly after.

Here’s how to make the most of the downtime:

  1. Update Your CV: Ensure your resume reflects your most recent accomplishments and is tailored to the roles you’re targeting.
  2. Develop STAR Stories: STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories are crucial for demonstrating your skills and focus capabilities. Write and refine these stories to use in cover letters and interviews.
  3. Invest in Career Coaching: A little professional guidance can go a long way.
