MNSW – Senior Policy Officer application checklist: Make your two pages count

Senior Policy Officer at Multicultural NSW application checklist
In this guide

Introduction

The MNSW – Senior Policy Officer role at Multicultural NSW is focused on improving how refugees and migrants settle in NSW. Working in the Settlement team in Parramatta, you would develop policy, coordinate initiatives and evaluate work supporting the NSW Settlement Strategy. It suits someone who can research a difficult issue, build agreement across organisations and take responsibility for delivery.

If you want to know how to apply for MNSW – Senior Policy Officer, start with the two-page limit. Your cover letter needs to explain how your experience meets the role, supported by a resume of no more than five pages. Choose examples that show the judgement behind your recommendations and what happened when the policy or project was put into practice.

The work involves government agencies, community organisations and people with lived experience of settlement. That makes consultation, clear advice and careful handling of competing interests central to your application. This guide explains the documents, the six focus capabilities and a practical way to organise your evidence. Read the official job advertisement; applications close Sunday 20 September 2026 at 11:59 pm AEST.

Application requirements for MNSW – Senior Policy Officer

NSW Government applications need to meet the submission instructions and demonstrate the experience required for the work. For this role, keep the documents within the stated limits and make your relevant evidence easy to find. You need to submit:

  • Cover letter, maximum two pages, outlining how you meet the requirements of the role.
  • Up-to-date resume, maximum five pages.

Use the cover letter to connect your strongest policy and project examples to settlement work. Your resume should support those examples with clear dates, responsibilities and achievements. Before submitting, check the online application for any additional questions and answer them exactly as asked.

Essential role requirements

You need appropriate tertiary qualifications or equivalent relevant professional experience and training. If you are relying on the equivalent-experience pathway, explain the relevant work and training clearly so the hiring team can assess it. Keep this information distinct from the examples you use to demonstrate policy judgement, communication and project delivery.

Candidate evidence for MNSW – Senior Policy Officer

Start with your experience developing and implementing service reforms, strategic initiatives or interagency projects. The role also calls for work across the policy process: research, development, implementation, review and evaluation. Select examples that explain the problem, the information you analysed, the options you considered and the result of your recommendation.

Settlement policy involves people whose needs and perspectives can differ substantially. Explain how you made consultation accessible, tested assumptions and used stakeholder input to improve the work. Evidence of resilience and innovation is strongest when you describe a constraint you encountered and the practical adjustment that kept the project moving.

The six official focus capabilities

The role description identifies these six focus capabilities for assessment during recruitment. The examples below are suggestions for demonstrating them through your own experience. Think and Solve Problems is required at Advanced level, so give particular attention to the quality of your analysis and evaluation.

Example application structure for MNSW – Senior Policy Officer

Your cover letter should explain your fit for the Settlement role through selected policy and project evidence. Keep it to a maximum of two pages. The outline below shows how to cover the six focus capabilities while keeping the letter coherent.

Cover letter section What to include
Opening paragraph Name the role and briefly explain your relevant policy or reform experience and interest in settlement outcomes. Give the reader a clear reason to keep reading.
Act with Integrity Within a policy example, show how you protected the quality and impartiality of advice. Include the judgement you exercised around evidence, interests or approvals.
Communicate Effectively Explain how you turned the analysis into advice or consultation material that the intended audience could use. Connect the communication to a decision or shared understanding.
Work Collaboratively Identify the partners involved and how you organised their contribution. Show where their knowledge or lived experience changed the work.
Influence and Negotiate Describe the point of disagreement, your approach and the agreement reached. Be precise about your personal contribution.
Think and Solve Problems Give enough detail to show how you judged evidence, compared options and evaluated effectiveness. Include the reason for your recommendation and the outcome it supported.
Project Management Explain how you planned and delivered the initiative, tracked milestones and managed risks or limited resources. State what was delivered and how you assessed its success.
Qualification or equivalent pathway Briefly confirm the appropriate qualification or relevant professional experience and training you bring. Keep supporting detail in your resume.
Closing paragraph Connect your evidence to the Settlement team’s work and confirm your interest in discussing the role.

You can cover several capabilities through one well-chosen example. For instance, a service reform can show your analysis, consultation, negotiation and delivery together. Use the outline as a coverage check, then write a connected letter with enough detail for the reader to understand what you personally did.
