Government work on the North Coast can involve caring for a patient, supporting a local service or keeping a regional project moving. The role that suits you will depend partly on the town where you want to work and how much travel you can manage. A search spanning the coast gives you more employers to explore, while a clear home base helps you decide which opportunities are practical.
This guide uses North Coast to cover the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers, including the Manning and Port Macquarie areas north through Coffs Harbour towards Lismore, Ballina and Tweed. The Hunter and Central Coast are separate search areas. It is a regional guide, so it does not treat all those towns as one local commute.
From 1 July to 30 September 2026, Team 3Thirty's records captured 1,323 distinct ads listed under the Port Macquarie and Mid North Coast, or Lismore and Far North Coast, recruitment categories. That was 7.0% of the 18,867 NSW ads captured across the period. These are historical listings, including closed jobs. A broad regional category needs a closer workplace check; it cannot tell you that every position is based in Port Macquarie or Lismore.
Explore health and the services around it
Health employers had the largest totals in this regional snapshot. Northern NSW and Mid North Coast Local Health Districts appeared alongside Hunter New England, which also covers services in the lower Mid North Coast. Their advertisements included clinical roles and support functions. Follow employers whose work interests you, then narrow the search to a facility or town you could attend.
| Employer or business unit | Ads |
|---|---|
| Northern NSW Local Health District | 602 |
| Mid North Coast Local Health District | 343 |
| Hunter New England Local Health District | 130 |
| Transport for NSW | 56 |
| Department of Communities and Justice | 47 |
| Fire and Rescue NSW | 27 |
| HealthShare NSW | 21 |
| NSW Health Pathology | 17 |
The employer name can describe a service area extending beyond your chosen town. Some roles operate across facilities, and regional teams can serve communities from a base elsewhere. Read the current description's location and travel passages before treating an employer's presence in this table as evidence of a nearby office.
Find a role pattern that fits your background
Nursing and allied health were prominent in the captured titles. Those pathways require relevant qualifications and professional registration. Administration and support titles give a different search direction for people who can coordinate information, work with customers or keep a busy service operating. A hospital or regional service can need several forms of experience, even though its largest advertising group is clinical.
| Words appearing in job titles | Ads |
|---|---|
| Nurse, nursing, midwife or midwifery | 381 |
| Medical trainee, fellow, intern or resident | 162 |
| Psychology and allied health terms | 142 |
| Administration, support or service officer | 118 |
| Project, program or portfolio | 42 |
For non-clinical roles, examine the responsibilities behind a title. A support position might centre on transactions and records, while a project role could require planning, reporting or coordinating stakeholders. Choose examples from your experience that show the work you personally completed. The government resume-skills guide can help you express those examples clearly.
Pick your town before comparing travel
Set an ordinary working area around the place where you live or intend to live. Search the broader region and the names of towns within that area, then confirm the role's normal base. A position with several possible offices can give you a useful choice. Check how that choice is agreed, especially when the team operates across a large service area.
Separate the commute from work travel. An occasional meeting in another centre, regular outreach and a position split between facilities have different implications. Ask the role contact about an unclear arrangement before investing heavily in the application. Flexibility, vehicle requirements and any overnight travel should come from the actual vacancy's instructions.
Search beyond one recruitment board
Start with I Work for NSW and NSW Health recruitment for current state roles. Search the relevant council's careers page separately, and use APS Jobs for Commonwealth opportunities. Those employers and recruitment systems are outside the historical figures above.
Compare a small shortlist on responsibilities, essential requirements and the working arrangement. Record whether the job is ongoing, temporary or casual, then check how its salary is quoted. Once a role fits, prepare the documents it requests using evidence you can substantiate. The government cover-letter examples guide supports that stage of the application.
Does a regional ad guarantee a role in my town?
A regional label gives you a search area. The current description needs to establish the normal workplace, any office choice and required travel. A service catchment can extend well beyond the base.
Does this guide include Central Coast jobs?
The numerical cohort uses the Mid North Coast and Far North Coast categories. Combined Central and North Coasts listings are excluded because they do not establish which part of that broader area applies.
Source note
We used captured I Work for NSW ads with a listing observation from 1 July to 30 September 2026, including jobs that have since closed. The regional cohort comprises ads assigned to Port Macquarie and Mid North Coast or Lismore and Far North Coast categories. It measures that advertised regional cohort, without confirming a particular town base or including every description-only coastal office option. Distinct ads may cover several positions or workplaces, title groups overlap, and council and APS recruitment are separate. Retained records do not contain every ad version.
