Communications professionals → NSW Government

Your work gets the message across. Make your application do the same.

You already know how to write, plan content and reach an audience. Moving into NSW Government means showing the decisions behind that work: who needed the information, how you handled competing views, and what changed because of your communication.

Beyond the finished campaign

Show the thinking behind the work.

01 / Audience

Who needed to understand something, and what was getting in their way?

02 / Judgement

How did you choose the message, channel and approval approach?

03 / Effect

What evidence shows the communication helped?

Your experience has a place

From brand and content work to public communication.

An agency campaign, website refresh, internal change project or community event can give you relevant evidence. The connection is strongest when you can explain how you made complex information useful, worked with stakeholders and evaluated the result.

Content and digital

Consider Communications Officer, Digital Communications Officer and Social Media Coordinator roles. Show editorial choices, accessible content, channel planning and how you responded to audience feedback.

Engagement and campaigns

Look at Communications Project Officer, Engagement Officer and Marketing Coordinator roles. Read closely for consultation, project delivery and the audiences the agency serves.

Choose by scope

A senior title needs evidence of the judgement and responsibility in that particular role. A large commercial budget alone does not establish your government grade. Compare the duties, capability levels and essential requirements.

Where good work gets lost

A portfolio shows the output. Your application must explain your contribution.

The polished work takes all the space

A campaign description can leave the audience problem, accessibility decisions and approval process implicit. Explain the choices you made, including a change you made after feedback.

Metrics arrive without meaning

Reach and engagement figures need context. Explain what the communication was meant to achieve and what the results tell you. Use the measures you actually recorded.

Stakeholders become a single sentence

‘Worked with stakeholders’ gives little detail. Show how you handled conflicting feedback, sensitive information or an approval that affected delivery.

What we would work on together

Build the application around one well-explained communication decision.

We review the role first, then ask focused questions about your own work. These are prompts to uncover your evidence, not a story to copy.

The brief

What needed to change?

Which audience was being missed or confused? What did research, service feedback or performance information tell you?

Your decisions

Why this approach?

How did you simplify the information, adapt the format, manage approvals and respond to different needs? What did you personally write, recommend or lead?

The result

How do you know it helped?

What changed in understanding, participation, service use or delivery? Explain the limits of the evidence as carefully as the positive result.

A digital communications application that reached interview

A client with digital content experience gave us examples from their work. We developed those examples into a cover letter for a government digital role. They later confirmed that the application had reached interview.

“I was successful in moving to interview stage for the application you prepared for me – really pleased.”

Anonymised client email. Individual outcomes vary; an application does not guarantee an interview.

Before you apply

Questions communications applicants ask

Do I need previous government communications experience?

Start with the actual advertisement. Some roles accept equivalent professional experience; others ask for a particular environment or specialist background. Show how your experience meets that wording, and be clear about anything you would need to learn.

Will my marketing results count?

They can be relevant when they demonstrate what the role needs. Connect the commercial result to the audience problem, your decisions and the quality of delivery. Avoid assuming that a sales result alone proves public communication or consultation experience.

Should I send my portfolio?

Follow the employer’s instructions. A portfolio can support an application when requested or permitted, but the required written responses still need to explain your own actions and evidence.

What if the deadline is close?

If the role is still open, you can submit the job details and purchase. We review the requirements and deadline after payment. See the application page for the current delivery and refund terms, and respond promptly to requests for information.
