Child Protection Caseworker Application Checklist: Resume and Two-Page Cover Letter

Child Protection Caseworker, Helpline and After Hours NSW Government job application checklist
In this guide

Introduction

DCJ is recruiting several ongoing Child Protection Caseworkers across the Liverpool-based Helpline and After Hours Response team. The work ranges from assessing calls and eReports to urgent field responses that protect children outside normal business hours.

This guide explains how to apply for Child Protection Caseworker and how to use the two-page cover letter. The letter must outline how you meet the role requirements, which calls for a focused casework example rather than a broad statement about wanting to help families.

The panel needs evidence that you can make careful decisions with incomplete and sensitive information. Show how you assessed risk, sought the right advice and communicated with families or partner services while keeping the child’s safety central.

These are shift-work roles with licence and clearance requirements. Confirm each condition before preparing the application.

Application requirements

The resume can be up to five pages and the cover letter up to two. Use the letter to show your casework judgement and relationships, then let the resume confirm the breadth and chronology of your experience.

  • Up-to-date resume, maximum five pages.
  • Cover letter, maximum two pages, outlining how you meet the role requirements.

Essential role requirements and work conditions

  • Relevant experience in child protection, out-of-home care or casework in another setting.
  • Valid driver licence at P1 level or above.
  • Paid Working with Children Check clearance number.
  • Availability for shift work during the team’s operating hours.

What to highlight in your application

The panel needs enough detail to assess what you personally did, why you chose that approach and what followed. The areas below are the strongest evidence priorities for this role.

Evidence area How to demonstrate it
Risk assessment with incomplete information Use a case where the information was sensitive, urgent or inconsistent. Explain what you verified, the risk factors you weighed and the action or escalation that followed.
Communication with families Describe a difficult conversation where you remained clear and respectful. Include how you explained the process, responded to concern and kept the focus on safety.
Work with partner services Show how you coordinated with another agency, community organisation or professional. Explain the information shared, the boundaries around it and the joint next step.
Supervision and sound professional judgement Choose a situation where you sought advice or used formal supervision to test your decision. The panel should see that you act independently within the right safeguards.

Example application structure

A two-page letter can carry one detailed casework example and a shorter example of partnership or communication. Protect client privacy by removing names and identifying details.

  1. Open with your relevant casework setting and the connection to helpline or after-hours work.
  2. Use a deidentified risk example that shows assessment, judgement and the action taken.
  3. Explain how you communicated with the family or person involved.
  4. Add a shorter example of partnership work, supervision or urgent prioritisation.
  5. Confirm the licence, clearance and shift-work requirements accurately.

What the panel will want to see in your examples

  • Child-centred judgement under pressure.
  • Clear communication about sensitive decisions.
  • Respect for privacy, procedure and professional boundaries.
  • Effective work with supervision and partner services.

Before you submit

Remove names and details that could identify a child, family or client. Check that your examples still contain enough context for the panel to understand the decision.

Confirm the resume and cover-letter limits, your Working with Children Check number, driver licence and availability for the roster.
