STAR stands for:

  • Situation – Briefly set the context.
  • Task – Explain your responsibility or objective.
  • Action – Describe the steps you took.
  • Result – Share the outcome and what it achieved.

Let’s break down one of the examples from Rachel’s cover letter:

ASIC interviews are structured and behavioural, meaning your responses will need to clearly demonstrate how you meet the role requirements through real-life examples.

Here’s how to prepare effectively:

  1. Carefully read the job pack, especially the section outlining the essential requirements and capabilities.
  2. Turn each requirement into a question. This helps you anticipate what may be asked and ensures your examples are directly aligned.
  3. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers clearly and persuasively.

Example conversions:

  • Requirement: Experience applying legal expertise in complex regulatory matters.
    Possible question: Tell us about a time you applied legal judgement to a complex regulatory issue.
  • Requirement: Senior stakeholder management, including influencing skills.
    Possible question: Describe a situation where you influenced a senior stakeholder to support a course of action.
