Technology: NSW Government Capability Guide

TECHNOLOGY - Team 3Thirty NSW Government job advice
In this guide

The technology capability matters more in the 2026 framework than it did in earlier versions.

That said, do not overthink this and assume you need a completely new story just because the language has shifted slightly. For most candidates, the adjustment is in the focus, not the whole example. You are usually just making your existing example more explicit about digital judgment, responsible use, privacy, records or efficiency.

The revised framework makes it clearer that this capability is not just about using systems. It also reflects digital judgment, cyber awareness, responsible use of tools, and information management.

That is why a STAR-style example works well here too. If you need help shaping the structure, go back to our STAR Method Examples for NSW Government Applications.

What changes across the levels

  • Foundational: uses available technology correctly and safely
  • Intermediate: applies systems confidently and chooses appropriate tools for routine work
  • Adept: uses technology more strategically, improves efficiency and works with stronger digital judgement
  • Advanced: leads or shapes better technology use across broader work
  • Highly Advanced: drives digital maturity, governance or enterprise-level technology practice

How to build a better example

Good examples often involve:

  • using technology to improve efficiency or effectiveness
  • managing information properly
  • understanding privacy, records or cyber considerations
  • improving digital ways of working

Example paragraph: Intermediate

In my current role, I use several systems to manage records, reporting and communication, and I make sure information is stored and shared appropriately. A good example was when I took over part of a reporting process that relied on several manual steps and inconsistent file handling. My task was to use the available systems more effectively without creating information management risk. I improved the way files were stored, used the available tools more consistently, and made sure information was handled in line with privacy and records requirements. That helped improve consistency and reduce avoidable manual effort.

Example paragraph: Adept

While supporting a team with high-volume reporting, I identified that part of the process was being handled manually in a way that was time-consuming and prone to error. My task was to improve efficiency while still protecting quality and information management standards. I introduced a more efficient digital approach using the tools already available to the team, documented the process clearly, and made sure the new approach still met records and quality requirements. That improved both speed and reliability.

Example paragraph: Advanced

In a senior role, I helped shape the way a team used digital tools by balancing efficiency with privacy, records and operational risk considerations. The challenge was that staff had different levels of confidence with the tools and were using inconsistent workarounds. I focused on how the systems could improve workflow in a more disciplined way, clarified expectations around responsible use, and reinforced the link between digital practice and public sector obligations. That lifted confidence and consistency in how the team worked digitally.

Final advice

Technology examples are stronger when they show judgment, not just software familiarity.

Panels want to know you can use digital tools responsibly and effectively in a government setting.
