The real problem

Qualified for the APS role, but not sure what to write in the pitch?

You might not be the problem. Your application structure might be.

APS applications are different from a standard cover letter. The panel is not looking for a broad career summary or a polished introduction that could fit any job. They need clear evidence that you understand the role, can meet the requirements, and can explain your experience in a way that fits the APS assessment context.

That often means reading the job ad alongside the Integrated Leadership System and Work Level Standards, then choosing examples that show the right level of judgement, responsibility, and capability for the role.

A strong APS pitch does not try to sound impressive to everyone. It helps a specific panel assess your fit for a specific role.

Most weak APS pitches are:

  • Too generic for the role
  • Too long for the word limit
  • Not linked clearly to the job ad
  • Missing practical examples
  • Hard for the panel to assess quickly
  • Written like a cover letter when the role asks for evidence
The template

Get the structure I recommend for APS pitches and statements of claims

This free pack gives you a practical framework for writing a clearer APS application before you spend hours rewriting the wrong structure.

Open with relevance

Start with a focused introduction that connects your background to the role instead of relying on generic enthusiasm.

Match the role requirements

Use the job ad, duties, selection criteria, APS Work Level Standards, and Integrated Leadership System language to guide what you include.

Use examples that prove capability

Explain your experience with enough evidence for the panel to assess you without making the pitch ramble.

Write to the APS context

Position your examples for APS-style assessment, whether the role asks for an applicant pitch, statement of claims, or short response.

Use the ILS without overcomplicating it

Use the Integrated Leadership System as a practical guide to the behaviours and capability signals your pitch should make clear.

Show the right work level

Use the Work Level Standards to check that your examples show the right scope, complexity, judgement, and responsibility for the APS level you are applying for.

Keep every word working

APS pitches are often short. The template helps you focus on the points that matter instead of filling space.

Avoid common mistakes

Stop submitting applications that are too broad, too vague, or disconnected from the role you actually want.

Created from the inside

Created by someone who has reviewed government applications from the inside

I have reviewed thousands of public sector job applications across Australia, including APS-style applications. I know what makes an application easier for a hiring panel to read, understand, and assess.

The strongest APS pitches do not just list experience. They connect the applicant's examples to the role, the Integrated Leadership System, and the Work Level Standards so the panel can see the level they are operating at.

Good candidates are often missed because their application does not make their fit clear enough. This template is designed to help you bring the right evidence forward and make the panel's job easier.

The point is not to sound more polished. The point is to show the panel what matters.

Why it works

Why this works better than a generic cover letter

Generic cover letters are written to impress anyone. APS pitches need to help a specific panel assess you against a specific role.

Instead of trying to sound broadly impressive, the template helps you show why your experience is relevant, what evidence supports it, and how it connects to the job ad, the APS Integrated Leadership System, and the Work Level Standards.

Role relevance

Bring the right parts of your background forward.

Criteria focus

Make it easier for the panel to see your fit.

ILS alignment

Connect your examples to the leadership behaviours and capability signals the APS commonly looks for.

Work level fit

Show examples that match the scope and complexity of the APS level, not just the general duties.

Clear examples

Use evidence that is concise, relevant, and assessable.

Social proof

Used by government applicants who want a clearer, stronger application

Applicants use Team 3Thirty resources because they remove the guesswork from public sector applications and help turn experience into structured, assessable evidence.

Implementation note for Sam

The live NSW page includes a Trustindex/review component here. For the APS page, we can reuse the same review component if you want general Team 3Thirty proof, or keep this proof-neutral section if you prefer not to imply APS-specific outcomes.

Common question

"Can I just use a normal cover letter for an APS job?"

Sometimes a cover letter is requested, but many APS roles ask for a pitch, statement of claims, or short response instead. A normal cover letter usually is not enough because it does not clearly map your examples to the assessment requirements.

If the job ad asks for a pitch, use the pitch to answer what the panel is actually assessing: your relevant experience, your examples, your fit for the role, and the level of capability expected in the APS.
