A school, a hospital and an agency team can each use the experience you have built in a different way. On the South Coast, those employers also span towns with very different travel patterns. Someone looking for a local role around Wollongong will make different choices from a person based near Bega. Start with the work you enjoy and the places you could attend, then explore the employers operating across your search area.
For this guide, South Coast includes Illawarra and the coast through Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Bega Valley. Wollongong forms the northern city part of that wider area. The historical figures use the broad Illawarra and South Coast recruitment categories; a regional category does not establish a workplace in any particular coastal town, and some employers also serve inland communities.
From 1 July to 30 September 2026, Team 3Thirty's records captured 1,127 distinct ads in those recruitment categories and explicit Wollongong location listings. They amounted to 6.0% of the 18,867 NSW ads captured across the period. The historical opportunities include closed jobs. Use this snapshot to choose employers and search terms, then confirm the actual base in a current advertisement.
Follow employers with different kinds of work
Illawarra Shoalhaven and Southern NSW Local Health Districts accounted for the largest totals. Teaching Service and school administration also featured, giving the snapshot an education pathway as well as a health pathway. Transport and NSW State Emergency Service advertisements suggest further directions for people with operational or professional experience. The table records advertising within the defined regional cohort; it does not list agency headquarters.
| Employer or business unit | Ads |
|---|---|
| Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District | 511 |
| Southern NSW Local Health District | 269 |
| Teaching Service | 91 |
| School Administrative and Support | 64 |
| Transport for NSW | 40 |
| NSW State Emergency Service | 28 |
| Department of Communities and Justice | 25 |
| HealthShare NSW | 18 |
An employer with a large service area can advertise positions at several facilities or offices. Its regional total includes that mix of work. A named school, facility or office in the current description is more useful when deciding where you would spend an ordinary week.
Compare health, education and support pathways
The titles show substantial clinical advertising, with education and administration also prominent. Teaching and clinical roles require their own qualifications or professional approvals. For school administration or a support function, look at the systems, information and people the role works with. Your experience coordinating a service can be relevant, while the vacancy sets the required level and responsibilities.
| Words appearing in job titles | Ads |
|---|---|
| Nurse, nursing, midwife or midwifery | 317 |
| Teacher, principal or school | 173 |
| Administration, support or service officer | 131 |
| Psychology and allied health terms | 105 |
| Project, program or portfolio | 38 |
These groups overlap. School titles include more than classroom teaching, and a support title can refer to several kinds of work. Read the position's responsibilities before choosing the examples you would use in an application. The government resume-skills guide can help you show a skill through a concrete action and result.
Make the regional search practical
Choose a working area around your home or intended home. Search the wider regional categories to discover employers, then use town names to examine options in that area. An advertisement can name several offices or require attendance at more than one facility. Clarify the arrangement before treating a regional label as a manageable commute.
For a role involving outreach or regional operations, check how frequently you would travel and whether overnight trips are expected. Separate those trips from the ordinary journey to work. If an office choice is offered, find out which locations are available for that position and how the employer decides the arrangement. Keep any uncertainty alongside the role on your shortlist.
Add the other public-sector searches
Use I Work for NSW and NSW Health recruitment for current state roles. Councils in your chosen area recruit through their own careers pages. Search APS Jobs separately for Commonwealth opportunities and check the available workplace for each role.
Compare a small number of suitable jobs on their responsibilities, requirements and employment term. Check whether a salary is a base amount, a package or an hourly rate, and establish what the ad requires you to submit. Build the written application around examples of your own work. The government cover-letter examples guide provides advice to use alongside those instructions.
Does the regional total show how many jobs were based in Wollongong?
It combines the broad Illawarra and South Coast recruitment categories with explicit Wollongong listings. A city workplace needs its own supporting evidence. The regional total should not be treated as a Wollongong office count.
Can I use one regional filter for every coastal town?
A broad filter helps discover employers, while town-name searches and the role description clarify the actual workplace. Keep nearby and inland options separate if you are willing to travel further.
Source note
We used captured I Work for NSW ads with a listing observation from 1 July to 30 September 2026, including closed jobs. The cohort uses Wollongong and the South Coast, Illawarra and South Coast, and explicit Wollongong location listings. These categories measure regional advertising, without confirming a coastal town base or including every description-only office option. Distinct ads can cover several positions or sites; title groups overlap. Council and APS recruitment are separate, and retained records do not contain every ad version.
