When Is the NSW Public Sector Shutdown in 2024?
The NSW Public Sector shutdown happens every year, typically spanning from the week of Christmas through to the week after New Year’s. For 2024, public sector agencies are directed to shut down from Monday, 23 December 2024, and will reopen on Monday, 6 January 2025.

What Are the Impacts of the Shutdown?
The shutdown provides an opportunity for most public sector workers to take time off, often using their annual leave days mixed in with all the public holiday. Public servants enjoy an extra day off during this period, known as the Public Sector Holiday, normally given the day after boxing day.
However, not all roles are included in this shutdown:
- Essential frontline roles, such as hospital staff, police, firefighters, and other emergency services, remain operational.
- In agencies with a mix of frontline and administrative functions, the “back office” may also remain partially open, but operations usually slow down significantly.
- Many staff will focus on “must-do” tasks rather than launching new initiatives or engaging in longer-term planning.
For those in non-essential roles, the shutdown period can mean extended delays in services, communication, and project progress as most employees are on leave.

- Longer recruitment timelines: If you’ve already applied for a role, be prepared for delays. Scheduling interviews and assessments is challenging when hiring managers and panel members are on leave.
- Limited communication: Hiring managers may want to progress recruitment, but the reality is that things will likely stall until the new year.
