Why You Might Want A Sydney Government Job
The NSW Government is Australia’s largest employer.
If you live and work in Sydney, you will know someone who works in the state government—maybe a policy officer, a manager, a project support assistant, a police officer, a teacher, or a nurse. Regardless of the role, they all work for the NSW Government.
Working in the public sector has a lot of benefits. One of the most obvious is a steady, fortnightly pay day. Stable pay is one of the best features of public sector work. You can also take advantage of very generous leave entitlements, including the very popular flex time.
What Is Government Flex Time?
As I mentioned, stable pay is a core feature of government work, and it’s been that way for decades. This stability is partly supported by a flexible working system that most Monday-to-Friday workers can use to book extra time off.
Most government roles are set at 35 hours a week (some are 38), which comes out to 7 working hours per day. But what if you’re late one day and only do 6½ hours, or if you have a lot to do and put in 8 or 9 hours?
The answer is flex time.
Public sector employees record their daily hours—start time, finish time, and the unpaid lunch break. If you work more than 7 hours in a day, you’ll add extra time to your flex-time credit. If you work less, you’ll deduct hours from it. Over a week, if you’ve worked more than 35 hours, you’ll have a flex-time balance surplus that you can later use to take shorter days or a full day off.
This is a simplified example—there are agency-specific rules about how many hours you can build up, the hours you’re allowed to work, and how many flex days you can take in a given period. Still, it’s definitely one of the key selling points of many government jobs, potentially adding up to an extra 26 days off each year.
The only downside is that if you’re in a role with this flex-time arrangement, your chances of getting paid overtime are minimal. If you work extra hours, it goes to your balance, and if you go too far above the limit, you may have to forfeit some of that balance. Which is a bummer.

How to Find Sydney Jobs on IworkforNSW

When you go to the IworkforNSW homepage, clicking “Search” will show you every job across the state—often over 3,000 different roles, many of which will close this week.
To narrow down your search to Sydney jobs only, use the first drop-down menu and select “Sydney Region,” then click “Search.”
Find a Government Job In Your Part of Sydney

You can also narrow your search to specific parts of Sydney. Click on the first drop-down menu, expand “Sydney Region” by clicking the plus icon, and you’ll see areas like “Inner West,” “Greater Western Sydney,” or “Sydney – East.”
Be aware that agencies sometimes list suburbs differently. For example, a job in Marsden Park might be listed under “Sydney – West,” “Sydney – Greater West,” or “Sydney – North/North West.” If you want to cover all bases, select all three location filters.
Another Way To Find Sydney Jobs Near You

Using the location filters is a great starting point, especially if you’re open to a broad area. For instance, “Sydney – West” currently returns over 200 Sydney jobs in suburbs like Bankstown, Campbelltown, and Parramatta.
If you want to narrow it down even more, you can use the text search field. Type in the suburb you’re interested in (e.g., “Parramatta”) to see all jobs based in or with the option to be based in that suburb.
