These eight NSW Government accountant and finance roles all close on or after 27 August 2026. The list now runs from practical entry opportunities in accounts and school finance through to senior business partnering, management-accounting leadership and transactional banking services.
The most achievable vacancies are not necessarily the ones with the simplest titles. The Administrative Accounts Assistant is a genuine entry route for someone with hands-on accounts support, while the School Sport Finance Officer becomes much more specific because proven MYOB experience is essential. At the senior end, NSW Treasury’s business-partner role asks for qualifications, systems and government-finance knowledge that sharply narrow the credible applicant group.

How To Choose Your Strongest Match
Start by comparing the work you have personally owned with the evidence each application asks for. If your best examples involve reconciliations, journals, invoices and finance enquiries, the Assistant Accountant, Finance Officer, Research Finance Officer or Administrative Accounts Assistant may deserve attention. If you already own budgets, forecasts, cashflow operations, staff performance or executive advice, compare the three senior roles instead.
Then look for the requirement that changes the competition. MYOB is the clearest filter in the School Sport role. Research acquittals create an advantage for applicants who have managed grants or project funds. The Treasury role is much harder to approach without CA or CPA status, four years of post-qualification experience, expert SAP use and knowledge of NSW Government policy.
A useful final test is whether you can name two substantial examples without inflating your responsibility. If you can explain the problem, your judgement, the stakeholder and the result in plain language, the application is likely to be worth preparing. If every example depends on what your manager or wider team owned, a closer-fit role may give you a better return on the same effort.

Assistant Accountant
This broad hospital-finance role covers journals, reconciliations, reporting, budgets, taxation and restricted financial assets. It is a credible government entry point for an accounting graduate nearing completion or someone with recent practical accounting experience. Study results alone will not create the strongest application; the panel needs examples of accurate system work, analytical follow-through and reliable deadline management. Candidates coming from general administration should only prioritise it if they have handled substantial accounting work themselves.

Finance Officer – Children, Young People & Families
Reporting, month-end support, invoices, procurement and budget adjustments make this a practical early-career finance role rather than a purely administrative one. Current accounting study, an accounts role or recent finance experience can provide a realistic base. A strong example will connect the transaction you handled to the error you prevented, the deadline you protected and the stakeholder who relied on the result. Occasional invoice processing without broader finance judgement is a thinner match.

Research Finance Officer
This part-time role supports research projects through accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, acquittals, reporting and general-ledger investigations. Direct research experience is helpful, but grant administration, university finance, project accounting and restricted-fund work can transfer well. The strongest candidates will show how they followed funding conditions and helped a non-finance stakeholder act on a financial issue. High-volume data entry alone is unlikely to demonstrate the investigation and compliance depth required.

Administrative Accounts Assistant
This ongoing Clerk Grade 3/4 role is one of the clearest government entry opportunities in the list. Accounts assistants, bookkeepers and finance administrators can be very credible without a degree or government background when they show journals, reconciliations, transaction checks and professional query resolution. A general office profile with only occasional invoice scanning is unlikely to be enough. The cover letter should include one financial discrepancy you resolved and one example of customer service or process improvement.

School Sport Finance Officer
The role combines MYOB financial records with payroll, procurement, assets, fleet administration, reporting and audit support. It can suit a bookkeeper or finance officer from outside government, especially someone used to a broad workload in a school, sporting body, membership organisation or smaller business. Proven MYOB experience is essential and will narrow the credible applicant group. Accounts-payable experience by itself may be too narrow unless you can add reporting, reconciliations and strong deadline management.

Senior Finance Business Partner
NSW Treasury is seeking a senior management accountant who can advise executives autonomously on budgets, forecasts, workforce costs and financial decisions. A large-corporate finance business partner may compete, but the stated candidate expectations create a high bar: CA or CPA, at least four years post-qualification, expert SAP use, NSW Government policy knowledge and PRIME proficiency. Applicants who prepared analysis for someone else to present are unlikely to show the required ownership. The best evidence will demonstrate respectful executive challenge that changed a resource or delivery decision.

Lead Assistant Management Accountant
This Health Manager Level 2 role leads four Assistant Management Accountants across Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange. Experienced management accountants from outside government can be credible if they have already led staff, coordinated reporting across business units and advised operational managers on financial performance. The title should not be mistaken for a junior vacancy. Strong individual-contributor experience without real team leadership is likely to fall short, even when the accounting work itself is relevant.

Senior Transactional Banking Services Analyst
This role connects high-volume finance operations with cashflow analysis, stakeholder advice, workload oversight and continuous improvement. Senior analysts and team leads from transaction banking, treasury operations, payments or shared services may transfer strongly without government experience. The key is to show more than spreadsheet production: the analysis must lead to action, and the improvement must be delivered while daily transactions continue. Basic Excel reporting or coordination without accounting depth will be difficult to defend at this level.

Open the checklist for the role that is closest to your current evidence and write down the two examples you would use before you start the application. If the role has a specific filter such as MYOB, team leadership, CA or CPA status, SAP or PRIME, deal with that question first. Strong general finance experience will not always compensate for an explicit requirement.
